Sunday’s Events, a Day Late

Published by tracker at 9:43 am under Puppies Edit This

Our neighbor came tapping at the door yesterday to see if we had lost a Golden Retriever puppy.  It wasn’t a bad guess, but we hadn’t, as it happened, and the little cuss was really too young to be “lost.”  After pondering the odds of only one puppy around, my husband, two shepherds, and I went out looking for puppies.

There were no more at the church across the street; however, the local feral Golden (and those are two words that do not belong together) was jogging across our yard as we started back.  She bolted, as she always does.  Husband and Tasha-dog followed in a hurry, feeling she didn’t need to be trespassing; Dustin and I followed more slowly and came around a slightly different path.  Both dogs can take credit for the find, Tasha by sight and Dustin by scent.

There were two more puppies behind our shed.  The male was growly and evasive; the female was mostly mopey and frightened.  Both were much happier after discovering that humans have central heating, as yesterday was rather chilly.  They are now buzzing through large quantities of puppy food and the occasional yogurt.  They’re taking to the pee-outside idea remarkably fast, and they’re beginning to waddle toward me when I call them — particularly the boy, who has turned into a real cuddlebutt.

He’s also showing signs of being a good working dog.  He likes tennis balls.  He scratches at interesting smells in my carpet.  He has a lot of energy for such a little fellow.  When he gets rolled by one of the big dogs by mistake, he just bounces back up and bites at their toes, while his sister in the same circumstances will holler and hide.  She too is becoming a cuddler, and will probably make someone a perfectly nice pet.  I’m not so sure the boy will make a nice pet.  He might make a lovely drug or cadaver detector, though.
